Summary
When the gypsy Carmen seduces Don José, he deserts from the army and abandons his fiancée Micaela.  There is no going back, but his new life isn’t easy and the bullfighter Escamillo is a dangerous rival for Carmen’s love.  The result is a hot-blooded tragedy played with intense passion in Bizet’s famous and much loved score.

Our new production Carmen will be our third since 1998 and will be directed for us this year by our Director of Productions Wayne Morris with costume designs by Nicola Jackson. Wayne and Nicola have collaborated on no less than seventeen operas for Diva Opera with outstanding results. They are joined this year by acclaimed Flamenco dancer and choreographer Nuria Garcia for an authentic Flamencan version of Bizet’s ever-popular opera. We welcome back French Soprano Karine Godefroy (Helene in La Belle Helene in 2008) in the title role and our audiences will also be delighted by the return of Cameron Rolls as Don José, which he last sang for us in 2002. Catherine Bouchier (Mimi in La Boheme in 2009) sings Micaela and David Stephenson returns for his ninth consecutive season to sing Escamillo.
